Co-sponsored by UConn Extension and UMass Extension Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture Program
9:00 - 9:15 Registration, Coffee available
9:15 – 10:15 Bio-control Developments on a Global Level
Ron Valentin, Bioline Agrosciences Inc., Oxnard, California
Ron will discuss the changes that are happening in young plant production, such as European regulations, and Global Gap starting with the production of cuttings at facilities around the world. What is the meaning of ‘clean cuttings’ and what does this mean for growers?
10:15-10:30 Break
10:30 – 11:30 New Developments You Can Use from Biocontrol Research
John Sanderson, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
John will present research results on improvements to the use of insect-killing nematodes, aphid biocontrol with predators and parasitoids, release methods for predatory mites against thrips, increasing Atheta/Dalotia numbers, and other tips.
11:30 – 12:00 Biological Control Agents (BCA) Use in Perennial Growing
Roger McGaughey, Pioneer Gardens, Deerfield, MA
Roger will discuss how they use BCA’s in their biological perennial growing process, both in the greenhouse producing rooted liners and outside in the field growing bare root material.
12:00 to 1:00 Lunch provided
1:00 to 2:00 Good Garden Bugs: Identifying Native Predators and Parasitoids Common in Outdoor Ornamental Production
Mary Gardiner, Ohio State University, Wooster, OH
Mary will discuss how to identify common native natural enemies (arthropod predators and parasitoids) found in outdoor ornamental production. She will also highlight their life cycles, feeding habits and other interesting behaviors.
2:00 to 2:15 Break
2:15 to 3:15 Encouraging Beneficials to Enhance Biological Control in Outdoor Production
Paula Shrewsbury, University of Maryland, College Park, MD
Natural enemies need food such as prey and floral resources plus shelter. Paula will discuss practices to enhance naturally occurring natural enemies and increase biological control by providing these needs.
3:15 – 3:45 Grower to Grower Discussion
5 Pesticide recertification credits have been approved in categories PA & 3A (New England States)
