Waltham Field Station, 1950'sWaltham Site is Focus of Local Action

The UMass Amherst facility in Waltham, once known as the Suburban Experiment Station, is scheduled to close its doors at the end of December, 2019. The closure was announced in June, 2018 by Deputy Chancellor Steve Goodwin. The 58-acre site has been home in recent years to a small number of Extension offices, with much of the one remaining open building leased to a group of four non-profit organizations (Waltham Land Trust, Boston Area Gleaners, Waltham Fields Community Farm, and Mass. Farmers Markets). Since the announcement, the tenants have become active in advocating for their continued use of the site, urging both UMass and the City of Waltham to come to their assistance. Recently, the University and the City signed an agreement giving the City a three-month period to look into a possible purchase of the site.
