UMass Agricultural Field Day set for June 24

AMHERST, Mass. — The UMass Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment will be hosting their annual Agricultural Field Day on Wednesday, June 24th from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. It will be held at the University of Massachusetts Crop and Animal Research Center located at 89-91 North River Road, South Deerfield, MA.

University of Massachusetts has a 358-acre agronomy and vegetable farm that conducts research on vegetable crops, agronomic and bioenergy crops, organic agriculture and pasture. The farm has a both a student-run vegetable project as well a project that researches cattle, offering students hands-on experience with livestock. Faculty, extension staff, and graduate students conduct applied research and are assisted by technicians, field staff and undergraduate students.

The public is invited to attend and take a guided tour to learn about current research projects at UMass.  Professors and graduate students will offer presentations on a variety of research topics including: growing malt barley, cover crops in potato production, hardwood biochar in agricultural soils, effects of bee disease on hedgerow plantings, dual-purpose cover crops and much more. Close-toed shoes are mandatory. Sunscreen and hats are recommended.  There is no registration fee; however, pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Lunch will be provided.

Certified Crop Advisors will receive CEU credits:

.5 credits for nutrient management and 2.5 credits for crop management
