Honey Bees Under the Microscope

Event date/time:
Saturday, April 6, 2019 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

Come spend your Saturday with UMass Extension and the MDAR Apiary Team as we explore bee anatomy under the microscope.

Ever wanted to look at a bee up-close? Wondered how its respiratory system differs from ours? Or what its ocelli look like? During this workshop we will cover both external and internal anatomy. Along the way, you will learn how to use a stereo microscope, how to dissect a bee, and how to identify external and internal body parts. If time allows, we will also cover other bee castes (drones and queens)! No prior microscope experience necessary.

Details:

  • Location: UMass Amherst, Fernald Hall (room 107B)
  • A $45 fee covers materials, lunch and light refreshments. Please bring cash or a check (made out to UMass Amherst) to the workshop. This workshop is partially supported by a grant from the USDA.
  • Parking is FREE in front of Fernald Hall on Saturdays.
  • Bring your own bees to dissect! Collect your bees LIVE and then place them in the freezer for at least 48 hrs. prior to the workshop. If possible, keep them chilled on the way to the workshop (in a cooler). We will have extra bees in case you are not able to bring your own.
  • Limited to 25 spots so sign up soon!

THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL
