Weather Summary - July 2016

Weather as Recorded at the UMass Cranberry Station

East Wareham

Prepared by Carolyn DeMoranville

NOTE: Beginning this month, the temperature and rainfall data will be compared to the 30 year average for the period 1981 to 2010.  The reports for January to June 2016 have been modified to reflect this new convention for the entire year, since often we refer to 'year to date' information.  The data that have been corrected in those reports is highlighted in bold.  It is worthy of note that compared to the 30 year averages from 1961 to 1990 (previous comparator), the average daily temperature was warmer in every month in the 1981-2010 data set compared to that in the older one.

July 2016 was warm, dry, and sunny.  With 4 days of 90+ temperature, July’s temperature was 2.4 degrees above average and 1.1 degrees warmer than July 2015.  The 90+ days were not consecutive, so there was no heat wave.  An additional 11 days had maximum temperatures from 85 to 89°.  As was reported for Boston, this is the 7th July in a row with above average temperature.  Maximum temperature was 95 degrees, recorded on the 23rd, and a minimum temperature of 55.4 degrees was recorded on the 20th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 83.2 degrees, 3.2 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 65.4 degrees, 2.5 degrees above the norm.  For 2016, 6 of the 7 months have seen above average temperature.

Sunshine at the Blue Hills Observatory totaled 66% of the possible sunshine hours, 9 points above average, making this the sunniest July since 1993. We had 12 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine, while on 4 days was there less than 10% sunshine.  We had fog in East Wareham on 4 days.

We recorded 1.92 inches of rainfall, which is 1.4 inches below the average for July.  A total of 1.32 inches of the rain came over the July 4th weekend, while the second half of the month saw only about a third of an inch.  Rainfall was recorded on 5 days, with only 2 having over 0.10 inch.   Year-to-date rainfall for 2016 is 28.48 inches, 4.27 inches below the average for East Wareham.  While this deficit is less than that at this time in 2015, the period of June and July this year has seen only 42% of the normal rainfall.  There was 1 thunderstorm recorded this month.
