May weather was slightly dry, slightly above average in temperature and with less sunshine than normal. Rainfall was slightly below the 30-year average. The temperatures for May averaged 55.7 degrees, 0.14 degrees above the 30-year average. The maximum temperature was 77 degrees on the 26th and a minimum temperature of 37 degrees was recorded on the 1st and 7th. Daytime high temperatures averaged 62.7 degrees, 2 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 48.7 degrees, 1.6 degrees above the norm.
Based on data from the Blue Hills Observatory, sunshine averaged 40% of the possible sunshine hours, 12 percentage point below the norm. There were only 3 days with 90% or better sunshine but 9 days with no sunshine at all. There were 20 days that were cloudy and overcast in East Wareham.
Precipitation totaled 3.55 inch, 0.16 inches below the average rainfall for May in East Wareham. There were 14 days with measurable precipitation, 10 with more than 0.1 inch. The largest 24-hour rainfall event was 0.6 inches on the 13th. Our total year-to-date rainfall is 22.98 inches, 1.59 inches above the average in East Wareham.
Official Spring Season
The official spring (March-May) had normal average temperatures of 46.8 degrees, just 0.5 degrees above the long-term average. Snowfall for the period totaled 1.8 inches (none in April and May). Precipitation was 0.6 inches below normal at 13.1 inches and this is 4.6 inch less rainfall than the same period last year (2018). Sunshine for the spring was 534 hours, 11.7 % less than the normal average number of sunshine hours for the three-month period. Sunshine hours were below average for April and May but above average for March.
