Amanda Kinchla, food science, with middle school students from SpringfieldSTEAM Middle School Students Visit Campus from Springfield

Food Science Extension faculty Amanda Kinchla’s “playground” in Chenoweth Laboratory was the site of a visit by a group of middle school students from Springfield, accompanied by UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development educators Lauren Dubois and Lizmarie Lopez-Ortiz, on November 20.  The students were participating in 4-H’s STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). At the Food Science laboratory, they learned how to extract DNA from strawberries. They also learned about landscape design from Michael DiPasquale, extension assistant professor in LARP, civil engineering from Mimi Alkattan, PhD student, and Sarah McCormick, PhD student, introduced them to psychological and brain sciences.
