IPM Message for Cranberry Growers: May 5, 2016

May 5, 2016

Some early grasses are up.  Growers are spraying Poast and/or Select for control of these early emerging grasses.  These herbicides work best when applied before grasses flower.  Be sure they are tall enough to have enough leaf area to absorb the herbicide (usually 4-8" tall is a good guide).  Grass herbicides CANNOT be applied through the chemigation system.  They will only control TRUE GRASSES; sedges and rushes are NOT controlled.  If you are not sure what your weed is, send Hilary a picture (hsandler@umass.edu) or bring in a sample to verify.

Clethodim Products: Select Max and Intensity One should be used with a NIS; Select 2EC and Intensity should be used with a COC.  Allow 14 days between applications.  Do not apply between hook and fruit set.

Sethoxydim Products: Poast should always be used with a COC.  Poast is ranifast after 1 hour of application. Allow 14 days between applications.
