Spotted Lanternfly and Environmental DNA: Insect Monitoring of the Future

The increased numbers of invasive insects, and the huge toll they can exact, argues strongly for better tools for pest species monitoring and surveillance. Once such tool relies on capturing the DNA shed by invasive insects as they move through their habitats, called environmental DNA (eDNA). Much like using DNA evidence in a criminal trial, invasive insect eDNA monitoring tools allow us to pinpoint where these species have been without ever having to catch them ‘in the act’. I’ll show how eDNA is a vast improvement over conventional methods in our ability to detect and monitor spotted lanternfly in forests, urban areas, and vineyards.

Pesticide Credit
Each webinar in this series offers 1 pesticide contact hour for categories 29, 35, 36 and applicators (core) license. All webinars in this series except Invasive Insects of Trees & Shrubs in Massachusetts: 2020 Updates on June 30 will also offer 1 pesticide contact hour for Massachusetts categories 26 (Tree Fruit) and 27 (Small Fruit). Licensed applicators may ONLY receive credit if the following criteria are met:
- Each pesticide license holder must attend the webinar LIVE and register for and attend the webinar with their own individual e-mail address.
NOTE: With the permission of each speaker, webinars will be recorded and archived. Recorded/archived webinars will not be available for pesticide credit. Pesticide license holders must attend the live webinar and successfully complete the quiz at the end for credit. - Pesticide license holders must provide their name and pesticide license number, mailing address, and company name at the time of registration.
- Each pesticide license holder must take a 5 question (multiple choice or true/false) quiz immediately at the end of each webinar and receive a score of 80% or better on the quiz*. Questions will be on content discussed in the webinar.
*The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires you to spend a minimum of 50 minutes on each webinar in order to receive one (1) contact hour or (1) pesticide credit. You must pass a post-test with at least 80% correct. Questions about this requirement?
