Science Quest is hosted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing for high school students in grades 10-12 from across the Northeast and beyond to visit campus to engage in exciting hands-on science activities, demonstrations, and guided lab tour. The Food Science Department hosts a demo for this event called “Funtastic Food Science” that gives students a chance to explore food science through hands-on demonstrations and experiments. Students get the chance to make whipped cream, explore the chemistry behind ion-set edible gels, learn concept of food viscosity and density, and play a “guess that flavor” game. After the hands-on demos, they understand how science can be applied to the food you eat every day, and have a funtastic time doing so.
