Farmers Markets

Farmers Market

A New England Staple, the farmers' market is a unique, community venue to buy and proudly sell Massachusetts made and grown goods.

A safe and successful farmers market stall should have:

  • A hand washing station
  • Samples, if provided, should be covered, served with appropriate utensils and at a proper temperature
  • Displays should be clean
  • Potable water should be used to wash and refresh produce
  • Products requiring refrigeration should be on ice
  • Provided bags for transporting produce should be new and clean of dirt
  • Cash handling should be completed after touching produce
  • Ready to eat foods should be stored at proper temperature, prepackaged appropriately
  • Customers should be encouraged to wash produce when they get home

The Massachusetts Department of Health offers an informational brochure about farmers' markets.
