In Celebration of Trees with Dr. Michael Dirr

Event date/time:
Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 9:00am to 4:00pm

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, we will hold TWO 2 1/2 hour walkabouts (choose either the morning 9:00-11:30 or afternoon 1:30-4:00 walk) around the UMass campus guided by Professor Dirr, each followed by a book signing of his new The Tree Book.

For most people who work with trees, Dr. Michael Dirr needs no introduction. He is the author of numerous books on woody plants that have become staples on our desks. He also has some New England roots, as he earned his PhD from UMass. His fingers are always on the pulse of the nursery industry, scouting for new introductions, and having himself introduced 15 trees into commerce. He has established several arboreta, consults on tree selection, and has penned tree guides for many campuses. The green industry has tremendously benefited from his keen interest in evaluating trees and his enthusiasm to share it with us.

His new The Tree Book is the go-to reference to more than 2,400 species and cultivars, authored by two of the biggest names in horticulture—Michael A. Dirr and Keith S. Warren. The featured trees include those widely available in the nursery trade, some new and promising choices, and a selection of overlooked options that deserve renewed interest. Each tree profile includes the common and botanical names along with details on foliage; flowers, seeds, fruits, and cones; native range; adaptability; and popular uses in landscapes. The Tree Book is a must-have resource for landscapes architects, city foresters, horticulturists, and enthusiastic home gardeners.

We will be offering copies of The Tree Book for sale on the registration form. Note: Dr. Dirr will only be able to sign books purchased as part of your registration or at the door (no personal copies, please!).

Sponsored by: UMass Extension, the UMass Stockbridge School, and Eversource.
