AGENDA
9:30 AM – Welcome & Introductions
9:45 – 10:45 AM – Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Updates: Winter Kill, Summer Fungal Pathogens, and Biocontrol
Dr. Joseph Elkinton, Emeritus Professor, Dept. of Environmental Conservation, University of Massachusetts Amherst
The invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is a pest of native hemlock in Massachusetts. The Elkinton Lab has shown the insect produces cryoprotectants in response to cold weather in December and January to prevent themselves from freezing. Warm temperature events in January make them more susceptible to freezing, and subsequent warming events cause significant levels of HWA mortality. Additionally, the Elkinton Lab has observed mid-summer mortality events of HWA in response to fungal outbreaks when rainy summers occur. This research, as well as the lab’s work on biocontrol of HWA using silver fly predators, will be summarized in this presentation.
10:45 – 11:00 AM – Break
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Invasive and Native Insect Pest Research Updates: Potpourri
Dr. Jeremy Andersen, Research Assistant Professor, Dept. of Environmental Conservation, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Dr. Andersen will discuss a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: emerald ash borer, winter moth and Bruce spanworm, fall cankerworm, and spotted lanternfly. He will provide updates about the lab’s work in these systems and what is currently being observed in Massachusetts.
12:00 – 12:15 PM – Instructions for pesticide and association credits
