Updates about invasive insects to keep your eye on in 2023 also to be provided. Cultural/mechanical management, biological control, and chemical management options to be discussed as time allows. |
9:45 AM | If You Plant It, They Will Come: Troublesome Insect and Mite Pests of Annuals and Perennials in the Landscape Dan Gilrein, Extension Entomologist, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County This presentation will review insect and mite pests often seen on landscape annuals and perennials. While many are minor and cause little damage, a few can significantly impact plant health. Dan will also discuss some new pest threats and management options. |
11:00 AM | Diseases of Trees and Shrubs: Predictions for the Upcoming Growing Season Dr. Nick Brazee, UMass Extension Plant Pathologist Dr. Brazee will review recent trends in landscape tree and shrub diseases, based on samples submitted to the UMass Plant Diagnostic Lab. Heat and drought have predisposed many woody plants to stress, allowing for attack from opportunistic pathogens. When appropriate, management recommendations will be provided. |

Hear what to expect in 2023, based on recent population dynamics and abnormal weather patterns, as well as the most current, creative, and effective avenues for control. |
9:45 AM | Into the Weeds on the Group 4 Herbicides Randy Prostak, UMass Extension Weed Specialist Several of the most commonly utilized turf herbicides are categorized in Group 4 by the Weed Science Society of America. Notable examples include 2,4-D; 2,4-DP; MCPP; dicamba; triclopyr; clopyralid; and quinclorac. Key characteristics and the most common use patterns will be discussed to enable more efficient and effective weed management with these materials. |
