In 2006, CEE PI, Ben Weil, his wife Lisa, and their 1-year-old daughter moved into the oldest, coldest, and least energy efficient house in Leeds, MA. By 2018 it is probably the most energy efficient and comfortable house in the village. The deep energy retrofit was done in phases over a decade, with the help of carpenters and other creative and dedicated craftsmen and tradespeople who are leaders in the green building movement in the western Massachusetts. Join Western Mass Green Consortium for a presentation sharing this journey, mistakes, successes, and lessons learned.

The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at UMass Lowell presents Continuing Education Conferences in the spring and fall of each year. These day-long conferences vary from event to event, presenting in-depth training on topics related to safer alternatives to toxic substances, clean energy, pollution prevention, resource conservation, chemicals policy, and toxicology. Lauren Mattison, Research Fellow at CEE, will present at the November conference.
Like all TURI events, Continuing Education Conferences are open to anyone, as these trainings can be beneficial to government officials, company executives, community leaders, and university personnel.

Dr. Benjamin S. Weil, CEE principal investigator and an extension assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will give an energy talk at the 19th North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival in Orange. Dr. Weil will explain the possibilities for reaching 100% renewable energy in New England by 2050 -- and creating an electric grid with variable sources of power such as wind, solar, and small hydropower.

Dwayne Breger, Director of UMass Clean Energy Extension, will be moderating a panel discussion, "Northeast State and Regional Climate Action 2017-2020" as part of the Citizens' Climate Lobby - 2017 Northeast Regional Conference. Panelists will discuss opportunities for state and regional actions to address climate change and describe their perspectives on current policies; scenarios for extending, strengthening, and introducing new policies; and opportunities for collaboration.

Join us for an interactive workshop on opportunities for Massachusetts food and beverage businesses to reduce operating costs, improve operations and prevent pollution through energy efficiency and renewable energy, waste reduction, and safer cleaning and sanitizing materials. Managers and others who work in facilities management, operations, engineering, environmental health and safety, energy and/or sustainability programs in food and beverage processing facilities. There is no charge for this workshop, but we ask that you register by Monday, November 14.
