Description of the UMass Cranberry Station Campus

From the South Coast (Dartmouth/Providence):

  • Take Rt. 195 East until it ends at Rt 495.
  • Bear right when the highway splits and follow signs for Route 25/Cape Cod (the left fork takes you North towards Middleboro).
  • Take Exit #2, ‘Onset-Wareham, Rts. 6/28’ and bear right off the ramp.
  • Take the left lane and proceed to the third traffic light (Atlantic Motel will be on the left).
  • Turn left onto Depot St. and go straight through the next intersection (traffic light; Cumberland Farms on the left).
  • Go over Route 25 and turn right onto Spectacle Pond Road (immediately after the overpass).
  • Take an immediate left onto State Bog Road, which brings you into the Cranberry Station parking area.

From the Northwest (Worcester):

  • Take I-495 South until you reach Exit #2.
  • As you pass the exit for Route 195 (Exit #1), the highway name changes to Route 25 and the exit numbers go up.
  • Take next exit (Exit #2), for ‘Onset-Wareham, Rts. 6/28’.
  • Bear right off the ramp.
  • Take the left lane and proceed to the third traffic light (Atlantic Motel will be on the left).
  • Turn left onto Depot St. and go straight through the next intersection (traffic light; Cumberland Farms on the left).
  • Go over Route 25 and take a right onto Spectacle Pond Road (immediately after the overpass).
  • Take an immediate left onto State Bog Road, which brings you into the Cranberry Station parking area.

From Boston via Route 3:

  • Take 93 South or Route 128 to the Braintree split and follow Route 3 South to its end, just before the Sagamore Bridge.
  • Follow signs for Route 6 West. After accessing Rt. 6 West, the canal should be on your left.
  • Travel approximately 3 miles on Rt. 6 West.
  • At the Bourne Rotary, take the first right and follow signs for Route 25 heading North/West towards Providence/Boston (stay towards the right and then get into the left-hand lane).
  • Go approximately 5 miles and take Exit #2, ‘Onset-Wareham, Rts. 6/28’.
  • Bear right at the end of the ramp onto Glen Charlie Road.
  • Take an immediate left (before the overpass) onto Spectacle Pond Road.
  • Take an immediate left onto State Bog Road, which brings you into the Cranberry Station parking area.

From Boston via Route 24 or Route 95:

  • Take Route 128 to Route 24 South OR Route 95 South. Exit at Route 495 and head south towards Cape Cod.
  • Take I-495 South until you reach Exit #2.
  • As you pass the exit for Route 195 (Exit #1), the highway name changes to Route 25 and the exit numbers go up.
  • Take next exit for ‘Onset-Wareham, Rts. 6/28’.
  • Bear right off the ramp.

From the Cape:

  • Take either the Sagamore Bridge or the Bourne Bridge and get on Route 25 heading north/west towards Providence/Boston.
  • Go approximately 5 miles and take Exit #2, ‘Onset-Wareham, Rts. 6/28’.
  • Bear right at the end of the ramp onto Glen Charlie Road.
  • Take an immediate left (before the overpass) onto Spectacle Pond Road.
  • Take an immediate left onto State Bog Road, which brings you into the Cranberry Station parking area.

Returning to the Major Highways from the Station

Turn right out of the driveway onto Spectacle Pond Road and left onto Glen Charlie Road.

Returning to the Cape and Eastbound: Once on Glen Charlie Road, go less than 100 yards, take first left and proceed down exit ramp to Route 25, heading towards the Bourne Bridge and Rotary. Going towards Falmouth, go over the Bourne Bridge. Going towards Hyannis, exit Route 25 just before the bridge and enter the Bourne Rotary. Take the 3rd right (3/4 of the way around), getting onto Rt. 6 East (pass the chinese restaurant and liquor store and then head straight). Go approximately 3 miles and follow signs to Route 6 East.

Returning to Route 3: Follow eastbound directions and exit Route 25 just before the bridge and enter the Bourne Rotary. Take the 3rd right (3/4 of the way around), getting onto Rt. 6 East (pass the chinese restaurant and liquor store and then head straight). Go approximately 3 miles and follow signs to Route 3 North.

Returning to Route 495: Continue on Glen Charlie Road until just before the traffic lights (see Cumberland Farms ahead and to the right), bear right. Continue to bear right at next two forks. Take exit ramp for Route 495 N.

Description of the UMass Cranberry Station Campus

Three main buildings comprise the facility: Administration Building, Laboratory Building, and Garage and Shop Building. The Admin (2-story grey stone) and Lab (long 2-story green siding) Buildings are to the RIGHT upon entering the parking lot; the Garage and Shop (1-story grey) building is to the LEFT. The Greenhouse facilities are located behind the Shop and Garage building, with the 11-acre Bog in the backmost portion.

Parking. Visitors are encouraged to park in the unpaved area (immediately to the left off the driveway), especially if part of a large meeting. Single visitors may find space in the marked areas in the lot or park parallel to the Lab Building on Spectacle Pond Road..

The Station Director's Office is located on the second floor of the Admin Building. Researchers' offices are located in the Lab Building. The Library is located at the back of the Lab Building. The Farm Manager's Office is located on the first floor of the Admin Building. The cold storage and pesticide storage facilities can be found by driving through the parking lot and turning right at the first paved driveway (ground floor of the Lab Building).

Directions to UMass Amherst via Route 91 (a bit longer but easier)

  • (from the south and eastern portions of MA): Take to Mass Pike to Exit #4 - Route 91.
  • Head North on Route 91 to Exit 19, Route 9.
  • Go East (right) on Bridge Street/Route 9. Go approximately 5 miles.
  • Turn left onto University Drive and follow to the end (pass Post Office on left and shopping on right). Jog right onto Mass Ave and then left onto Commonwealth Drive.
  • Pass the Mullins Center on your left. Turn right at the next light onto Campus Center Way and park in the Campus Center garage.

Directions to UMass Amherst via Palmer (shorter but rural with more turns)

  • (from the south and eastern portions of MA): Take to Mass Pike to Exit #8 - Palmer.
  • After the tolls, turn right onto Route 32 South.
  • At the second set of lights (road comes to a 'T'), turn right onto Route 20 North. This is a small sign for Amherst.
  • After approx. 1 mile, the road forks at a traffic light. Stay right going towards Belchertown/Bondsville on 181 North.Cross RR tracks. There will be several small forks in the road; stay right on 181 North. You will come to an intersection (Mobil gas station diagonal left). Continue through intersection.
  • Approx. 1.5 miles (just past a Shell station), the road bends and there is a low white pillar in the road. Follow the road, keeping the pillar on your right. Head towards Rt. 181 and Rt. 9 -- sign for Amherst. Approx. 0.1 miles, turn left onto Rt. 181 towards Belchertown. Road bends to right, stay on 181.
  • At Belchertown center (approx. 5-6 miles), continue on this road, proceeding through the traffic light. It becomes Rt. 202 North (towards Pelham). The town green is on your righthand side.
  • Approx. 1 mile, MacDonald's will be on your right, Mobil on left. At traffic light, turn left onto Route 9 West. Sign for Amherst/Northampton. Stay on Rt. 9 West for approx. 6 miles. Pass Pelham and Amherst town lines.
  • Approx 1.5 miles, road forks. Stay left on Route 9 West (first light; Gulf station on left, small bank on right). You will pass Amherst College (left) and the town green (right). Cross over Route 116 (second light).
  • At the third traffic light, you will see a sign for UMass-Amherst (road has now opened up to wider highway). Turn right onto University Drive and follow to the end (pass Post Office on left and shopping on right). Jog right onto Mass Ave and then left onto Commonwealth Drive.
  • Pass the Mullins Center on your left. Turn right at the next light onto Campus Center Way and park in the Campus Center garage.
