East Wareham

August was warm, wet and an average sunshine month.  The temperature averaged 71.15 degrees, 0.65 degrees above the long-term average. There were 2 days with a temperature of 90 or above and 8 days with temperatures of at least 85 degrees.  The maximum temperature of 90 was recorded on the 13th and 22nd.  The minimum temperature of 53 degrees was recorded on the 24th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 80.87 degrees, 2.2 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 61.42 degrees, 0.98 degrees above the norm.  All night temperatures were less than 70 and 8 nights had temperatures equal to or below 60 degrees.

Sunshine totaled 57% of the possible sunshine hours, which is 1% point below the norm.  There were 8 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine, and 3 days with no sunshine at all. At East Wareham, 16 days were clear with no clouds or fog. 

Precipitation totaled 4.67 inches, 0.8 inches above normal and 0.26 inches less than August 2022.  We had measurable precipitation on 13 days, with 9 of those having more than 0.1 inch. The highest 24hr precipitation of 1.46 inches was recorded on the 19th. Year-to-date rainfall received in 2023 is 35.03 inches, 2.68 inches above long-term yearly average for East Wareham. Compared to 2022 at this stage, we have received 6.52 inches more rainfall for the year.

Official Summer Season 

The official summer (June, July, and August) was warmer, above average precipitation and below average sunshine hours.  The average temperature was 70.96 degrees, 1.79 degrees above the 30-year average for the 3-month period. Total rainfall for the season was 14.04 inches, 3.08 inches above the normal precipitation for this time of year; 2023 season had 5.88 inches more precipitation compared to 2022 season.  Sunshine hours totaled 712 hours; this is 31 hours below the average for the three months.  We had a maximum temperature of 92 degrees recorded on July 29th and a minimum temperature of 46 degrees recorded on 4th, 5th, and 9th of June. We did not have an official heat wave this summer.  A heat wave is typically defined as three consecutive days where the temperature reaches or exceeds 90 °F.
