IPM Message for Cranberry Growers: Jul 12, 2011

SCALD WARNING

Weather conditions forecasted for Thursday, July 14 and Friday, July 15 indicate possible scalding conditions. The UMass Cranberry Station predicts that scald can take place when temperatures are moderately high, humidity is relatively low and there is abundant sunshine.

This situation may require irrigation, preferably 60-90 minutes in the early morning, on beds with thin canopy (new beds in particular), dry beds, beds with poor drainage, and those with a particularly heavy fruit load. Daytime irrigation may be necessary if the bog is not fully hydrated prior to the onset of scalding conditions.
