IPM Message for Cranberry Growers: Jul 5, 2019

July 5, 2019

Many growers have put out their second fungicide; some are heading into their third.  Green spanworm is flying. Spag is finally flying; we got 90 moths from 6/27-7/2 on State Bog, less than 1 week with very low numbers up until now. Fruitworm moths are flying and will be laying eggs. It is certainly time to assess % out-of-bloom (oob) for timing your fruitworm sprays. As suspected, we are still under 50% oob on average on all varieties on State Bog.  The numbers were widely divergent in some instances (standard deviation close to or greater than the mean), but here they are.

Early fruit set fertilizer should be going out now too.  About 50-60% of your N dose can go out in this application, depending on what you’ve done so far, how the vines are looking and what your yield expectations areMaintaining some water in your ditches can help keep your vines less stressed during extended hot periods, like what we are going through right now.  Irrigation is a must; many are doing 2 hr in the early morning to keep vines well watered.  Keep in mind, of course, conflicts (water in ditches) with any label requirements when applying fungicides or insecticides.
