Pheromone traps to monitor for Spag, BHF, and/or cranberry girdler, should be up. Photos to aid identification of the moths are in last week’s message on the website. Sparganothis moths are flying. If you are going to use Intrepid or Altacor to manage 2nd generation, applications would go on 3 weeks after onset of flight (end of June) and 10-14 days later.
Green spanworm moths are flying. The females moth are more distinct (picture on pink background) but more commonly seen are the yellowy males (picture on bog).
Scale has started to release the crawlers. Now is the time to spray, particularly on Stevens and super hybrids. Honey bee deliveries are starting over the weekend as well. If you do treat with Diazinon for scale, try to allow a few days before bringing in your bees. Please contact Marty at martys@umass.eduif you have questions.
Actara and Avaunt are very hard on the bees, be sure you have enough weevil to warrant a spray at this point. Much of the weevil damage has already happened.
Growers should be thinking about first fungicides this coming week, especially on the early and super hybrid varieties. Consider using a broad spectrum, like Mancozeb, for your first application.
We have been getting reports of injury symptoms in areas where Zeus has been applied but the injury does not seem to be associated with (improper) timing. Please see our upcoming newsletter for photos but a few are attached here. The injury is very patchy and not bog-wide. Injury is sometimes associated with another stress such as pruning, scale injury or water stress. In many instances, but not all, the uprights seem to be producing new growth. We will be tracking these areas to see how things progress and document yield impacts where possible.
We got our first quick-acting fertilizer dose out on State Bog and Rocky this past week. If you have specific questions about fertilizer, please feel free to contact Peter at peterj@umass.edu.
We will be hosting another Zoom bogside on Wednesday June 28, 8-10 am; 2 contact hours will be offered. Please contact Robyn Hardy for link information (rmhardy@umass.edu).
If you have specific items you’d like to see addressed in the IPM message, please let me know.
