IPM Message for Cranberry Growers: June 3, 2022

June 3, 2022

We will be holding an in-person bogside on Wednesday June 8, 9-10 AM.  Please skirt wide of the construction area and park near the bog as best you can.  1 contact hour will be offered.

This proved to be the week of SPAG.  Many growers reported all size Sparganothis fruitworm in their sweep sets.  Pheromone traps should be up! Weevil has made its big push and many growers have already managed them with Avaunt, Actara or Fanfare.  Green Spanworm window has closed, moths have been spotted flying.  It is past time to treat.

Scale has presented a quandary this year again.  The scale crawler release is delayed, and bloom is fast approaching.  Our only option for management is diazinon at crawler release.  Diazinon kills bees but the scale are still not ready to be sprayed.  Our collections show that the females are healthy and have started to produce eggs but not released them as crawlers yet.  Migratory beekeepers are contacting growers now for delivery time.  If you have a bad scale site, try to delay your bee delivery until you have been able to apply your scale spray.

We have heard of several reports of possible injury associated with Zeus applications.  The trend is not consistent so if you are seeing any injury, please let Katie or me know.  Damage appears to be more so associated with another stress, such as pruning or sanding, but we are still trying to sort it out.  The older leaves seem delayed in turning green but uprights that we have seen do have new growth. We are cautiously optimistic that the vines should be ok.  Below is a photo of a bog treated with Zeus and areas of damage track exactly along with the tile drains.

If grasses are up, now is a good time to spray one of our grass herbicides (Select, Intensity).  Intensity One is the only grass herbicide that can be chemigated.  Some growers may be applying Callisto now as a postemergence herbicide. ALWAYS include an adjuvant when using POST herbicides.

Pheromone traps to monitor BHF (picture 1), girdler (picture 2), and Spag (picture 3) should be up by now.  Check the traps weekly and change the lures every 3-4 weeks.
