IPM Message for Cranberry Growers: May 15, 2016

May 15, 2016

Gypsy moth larvae, sometimes up in the 20's have been reported.  Winter moth is still a concern especially if the insect has been problematic on your bog in previous years.  The long string of frost nights has made application of May pesticides difficult, however we appear to be heading into a better weather window.  Devrinol applications can still be safely made.  Some growers are putting out early season application of grass herbicides, like Poast and Select.  Many different products are available and some have different restrictions and recommendations than others.  Check pp. 50-51 of the 2016 Chart Book for more details and recipes for spot treatment solutions.

Dodder seedlings have been emerging for the past week, especially in take-off areas and warm spots.  Now is the time to apply Casoron (if you haven’t already) for dodder control.  You can wait a little longer if you are using QuinStar as it is an early postemergence product.  Some growers have had good success with chemigating Callisto now and using a follow-up treatment in mid-summer if needed.
