Tomatoes in Massachusetts

Tomatoes are harvested between the months of July and September. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables grown by local farms supports our local economy — plus they taste great and have high nutritional value. There are more than 4,000 different varieties of tomatoes, ranging in size, shape, and color. With many ways to enjoy them in meals and snacks, it’s no wonder they are one of the most popular vegetables in the United States!

  • Choose tomatoes that are firm, glossy, smooth, and plump. Avoid those that are damaged, bruised, soft, or cracked.
  • Ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, keep in a cool area between 55° and 58° F.
  • Once tomatoes are cut or cooked, store in the refrigerator to keep them safe to eat.
