Jan Pitney has been a volunteer with the Barnstable County 4-H Program for the past eighteen years. She was recruited by a former 4-H horse club leader to assist her club when Jan's daughters wanted to join. Little did we know that Jan would be taking over the 4-H Equus Friends 4-H Club a few years later! Jan has a large family, has recently retired as an art teacher in the Wareham School District and always finds time for her club and other 4-H commitments. Jan's daughters were active 4-H members and are now 4-H volunteers as is her daughter-in-law; 4-H is truely a family affair for Jan! Jan also serves on the Barnstable County 4-H Horse Advisory committee and the Barnstable 4-H Advisory Committee and participates in all the county wide events and activities. She is always willing to take on the unpopular assignments such as working in the 4-H Kitchen at the Barnstable County Fair during the hotest days in July and cleaning the Barnstable Fair Youth Building or the barn. She can always be counted on to get a crew to volunteer along with her! Jan is a wonderful asset to the 4-H program and represents exactly what a great volunteer should be by leading by example. She is a true 4-H gem.
